TaPRA exists in order to facilitate research through and into theatre and performance. Over 220 researchers from across the world came to this year’s conference, a testament to the growth of theatre and performance as a field of research.
A key theme of the 2010 conference was performance and identities. On Thursday, University of Glamorgan Professors Stephen Lacey and Steve Blandford discussed their research into the impact of Network television programmes (Dr Who and Torchwood) on the perception of Wales. They were joined by eminent US Theatre academic Professor Tracy C Davis, who discussed nineteenth century black-faced minstrels.
On Friday 10th, the conference debated the importance of national theatres to national identities with John E McGrath (Artistic Director, National Theatre Wales), Vicky Featherstone (Artistic Director, National Theatre of Scotland) and Anwen Jones (Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru and University of Aberystwyth).
Other sessions covered community theatre in Northern Ireland pre- and post-Good Friday Agreement, contemporary Russian theatre, the use of new technologies in performance, and performance training.
